Westenders Throw the Pizza Down!

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza-pie...." GrumpyGus shows off winning form as he tosses pizza at the Westenders Pizza Throwdown!

As you know, the only thing Westenders like more than scooters is great food! Being fortunate to have a number of talented cooks in their number means great eats at their get-togethers! Most of our scooters are Italian, so it stands to reason that they'd also be fond of Italian cuisine, and what's more Italian than pizza?

The Doctor is in!

Doc has good advice for you!

The Westenders Scooter Club has many interesting and talented members, one of which is 'Doc', who is a real doctor. When he's not riding or working on his scoots or tinkering with his classic airplane, he can be found at his practice helping people feel better.

While scooterists do their best to ride safety and avoid accidents and injuries, spills and ouchies can still happen. We are privileged to be able to share the following article from Doc regarding the most common injuries experienced by scooterists, and what action you can take to minimize their impact...

Westenders Riding Protocols

 |

This document is also available for download here.

Westenders Riding Protocols
(adopted from the Minions SC, Spokane, WA)

These protocols have been adapted from the riding rules of the Minions SC of Spokane, Washington. These protocols are set forth to establish a common standard of riding behavior for the safety and enjoyment of all participants. Please review these protocols. If they don't work for you, please don't ride with us. Group riding is a lot of fun, but it requires situational awareness, discipline, and good riding techniques and manners. If you repeatedly or intentionally fail to follow these protocols during a ride, you will be told to leave the ride. While this may sound harsh, it's nowhere near as harsh as the injuries and damage that can be caused by a 'joker in the deck' who refuses to ride with a sense of consideration for the other riders.

1. During rides, there will be a ride leader and assistants who will ensure the ride goes smoothly. Please listen to them and obey their instructions.

2. Come ready to ride. The Westenders do not operate on 'scooter time'. When we say we leave at a certain time, that's when were leaving, not 5, 10, or 45 minutes later. Our rides often have a time constraint, like catching a ferry. If you want coffee, snacks, or a bathroom stop, arrive in enough time to address those needs before our departure.

3. Have enough fuel. We plan our rides on the assumption that all riders start the ride with near-full tanks, and fuel stops along the route will be planned accordingly. Do not show up running on fumes, and expect us to make an unscheduled fuel stop just for you.

4. Ride within your comfort zone as you are responsible for yourself and to those around you. Don't let the pack intimidate you. If you feel uncomfortable with the speed or pack formation, give yourself more room and/or slow down.

5. Ride in two rows, and try to stay in your row. Don't swerve back and forth. If you are new to riding in a pack, ride in the right hand row as it will give you more room to turn.

6. Ride staggered to the scooter on the row next to you. Avoid riding directly beside them. This provides space in case either of you needs room to make a turn, avoid an obstacle, or if the group needs to go single file.

7. Look and signal before changing lanes in the pack. Turn signals are ok, but pointing usually gets other's attention quicker.

8. Signal when you turn with the group, so the people behind you know that the pack is turning.

9. Keep a safe stopping distance between you and the scooter in front of you. A good rule is to allow 2 seconds of space.

10. Pay attention to what is happening at least several scooters in front of you to anticipate obstacles or turns.

11. Do not ride next to the ride leader. Stay several feet behind, even at stops. They need the room to react and set up turns.

12. Do not race head of the ride leader. The pack may turn at any time, and leave you to find your own way home.

13. Do not assist in blocking traffic at intersections. The ride marshals and selected riders will do this. If an intersection is not blocked, stop.

14. Others behind you may have heavier loads or brakes not as good as yours so brake slowly.

15. Bring your own tools, extra cables, and spark plugs with you on the ride. Don't expect others to have them.

16. If you feel you are going to crash into the scooter in front of you veer to the outside, but be sure not to cross into traffic.

17. If a rider goes down, all bikes must stop, and signal to warn approaching bikes.

18. When a scooter breaks down, all riders must stop while the situation is assessed.

19. If the problem is routine and can be fixed in less then 15 minutes, the repair will be done. If the scooter has a breakdown that isn't practical to fix on the road, or is reoccurring, the group will make sure the broken down scooterist can find transportation home, then continue riding.

20. If you do something stupid that causes damage and injury to others, immediately apologize and accept the consequences. You ride with the Westenders with the understanding that you are able and willing to accept financial responsibility for any damage or injury you cause.

21. And finally, The Westenders Scooter Club values the personal, emotional and physical safety and security of all riders and therefore we reserve the right to deny or limit access to Club events to any non-member.

Westenders 101

Westenders 101
(Or, "Everything You Wanted To Know About Our Scooter Club...
But Were Afraid To Ask")

History

The Westenders got their start in the fall of 2006 when four West Seattle scooterists thought it would be a neat idea to have their own scooter club. There are many great scooter clubs in the Seattle area, just none of them really addressed our needs. A good idea tends to attract like minds, and like Topsy, the Westenders 'just growed'. We do not limit membership to West Seattle scooterists. Westender is as much a state of mind as a question of geography. As the end of 2008, the Westenders have over 40 members, and enjoy a fairly active riding and social schedule. Read our Riding Protocols here.

What We're Like

We are into scooting, food, friends, music and fun. We are a family-friendly organization that is open-minded and accepting of all people of good will; in other words, the 'golden rule' applies here. We love to get together, party and have fun, but believe in moderation and common sense when it comes to alcohol and riding. In other words, you can drink and scoot if you wish, but be careful and responsible. We do expect every Westender to be a safe and responsible rider who uses good judgment and ride discipline when group riding. We are a "no drama" kind of crowd. We have a nominal leadership structure; decisions are made by consensus.

Membership is by invitation. While we don't mean to come across as cliquish or exclusive, this policy is made with good reason. We have a good thing going here with the Westenders, and we have seen examples where the chemistry in a group is spoiled by the appearance of an abrasive personality or a reckless/inconsiderate rider. Any current Westender can recommend a prospect for membership. A prospective member should be someone who (1) is fairly well known to the person recommending, (2) be a safe and responsible rider, and (3) be the kind of person the member recommending would want to do things and hang out with (we call this the 'guilt by association rule'; if this isn't someone you'd personally like to be with, don't recommend them). We ask prospective members to come and ride with us at least a couple of times, to ensure that we're a good 'fit' for you, and vice versa. If you decide you would like to be a member, the membership will vote on it at our next meeting.

The Westenders expect new members to be willing to participate and help out with Club functions (like our annual Tour di Mari rally) as their schedule allows. We strongly believe that if everyone does a little, no one has to do a lot, and we all have a good time. If you are just looking for a group to occasionally ride with, and have no interest in helping out otherwise (even if you have the time), please go elsewhere. There are many scooter groups in the Seattle area that cater to the occasional casual rider.

To defray the costs of operation that include our webhosting and domain name, all adult members are assessed dues of $10 a year, payable in July. There is no initiation fee.

Westender Quirks

(or "just what is it with the 'portfolios' and nicknames, anyway?")

You may have noted that each Westender is a minister of something; here's the backstory on that: the Westenders were inspired by the 'Mod' scooter culture in 1960s England. England also has a quirk in that it's government offices are 'ministries' (and a ministers assignment is known as a 'portfolio'). The wide range of frequently odd-sounding government ministries was lampooned perfectly by the English Monty Python comedy troupe with their "Ministry of Silly Walks" sketch. Hence, for no particularly logical reason except, like Napoleon invading Russia, it seemed like a good idea at the time, each Westender is invited to pick a ministry for themselves. It could be something that one can use to contribute to the group (e.g., GrumpyGus, a superb Chef, is our Minister of Food Operations [MoFO] ), a personal trait (Minister of Optimism - MoO; that's Chewy), or whatever. Let your creativity run wild. The self-assignment of 'portfolios' is one of the things that makes the Westenders unique, sort of like the way members of the Wussys SC tattoo the word 'wussy' on their bodies.

No scooter club is complete without member nicknames. Sometimes the nickname is self-assigned (Joni/Jett), sometimes it is assigned by others in the Club (Bob/RogerTango). If you currently don't have a nickname, be patient. Yours will find you (heh heh).

Portfolios and nicknames are recorded on a MSExcel spreadsheet in the 'Files' section.
How We Communicate: We have two main venues of communication. One is our website (www.westenders.org), and associated Forum. The website provides information on upcoming events, and links to our Photo Gallery. The Forum is used for 'members-only' communication. We encourage all members to visit or subscribe to the "Club Announcements & Info" forum to keep abreast of upcoming fun events. We also have a MySpace page, which is our public image. We use this site to, among, other things, share what's going on with the Westenders with the scooter community and public at large. We also have a mailing list to keep members updated on time-sensitive events and announcements.

Meetings: Currently, the Westenders meet about every two months. This is flexible, based on what may be coming up on the agenda that needs to be discussed. Upcoming meetings will be posted at least two weeks in advance in the "Club Announcements & Info" forum. Meetings are open to members and invited guests only.

How Rides are Planned: As mentioned before, there is only a nominal leadership structure. That means anyone can plan a ride/event! Here's an easy step-by-step:
1) Have an idea. It can be as simple as meet and ride for a while, or as complex as a jaunt to go do something fun (movie, dinner at an interesting place, bowling, Rat City Rollergirls, whatever).
2) Make up a plan. Be sure to include:
a. Date and time
b. Meeting place
c. Brief description of the plan
3) Post your ride proposal on the Forum 'Club Announcements & Info' section. Be sure to ask if anyone is interested. Be sure to note alternative plans (if any) due to weather.
4) Unless this ride is a 'members-only' event, the Webmistress/master will post it on the Website, and enter it on the calendar.
5) After the ride, prepare (or have someone do it for you) a brief summary of the ride to post on the website, so that others can know what they missed.

Don't be disappointed if there are no takers for your ride idea. We all have very busy lives and sometimes we all have to pass on a riding opportunity, no matter how nifty it sounds. Keep those ride ideas coming! The Westenders believe in the idea of member empowerment. Any member can be a leader; all it takes is an idea, and the initiative to make it happen.

Westender Regalia: You may have noticed several members with Westenders logo clothing, and Westender stickers on their scoots. You are encouraged (but not required) to show your pride in the Club by wearing Westenders logo gear and having a Westenders sticker (size of your choice) on your scoot. In the early days of the Westenders, the Ministry of Propaganda produced these products for the members. As the Club has grown, this has become a bit of a chore, so this is now a DIY affair. Forum section, you'll find picture files of the Westenders logo. You can download these files and use your inkjet printer to make t-shirt transfers, fabric iron-on patches, and stickers using products available at most office supply stores. If you have any questions regarding techniques, please contact RogerTango, the Minister of Propaganda.

Legshield banners are available as well, for availability and prices, please contact Hairy LaPinch, Minister of Rides.

In closing, please remember that like the Westenders, this document is a living document, and subject to evolution and amendment as our group grows and evolves. We encourage you to take an active role in making the Westenders an even better and more fun group than it already is.
