Now that Spring finally seems to be upon us, the opportunities to go riding and have fun are here. Never one to pass up on a good thing, or keep it to himself, Westender GrumpyGus, a true Renaissance Man whose taste in music is exceeded only by his world-class culinary skills, put together one of the best evenings ever enjoyed by the Westenders; an evening of great food, good friends, excellent music and fun!
There is nothing quite as irresistable as a great idea, so it was no suprise when over a dozen Westenders showed up at The Marco Polo Bar and Grill on Friday night. The gang enjoyed cold drafts and the MPB&G's speciality, pressure-fried chicken, that is some of the best Seattle has to offer!
For GrumpyGus' next magic trick, he proceeded to lead the group on a wonderful nocturnal prowl past Boeing Field, Rainier Beach, and the Seward Park neighborhoods before returning to Georgetown. The ride featured GG's thrilling 'carb cleaner dash' down a deserted Airport Way, which gave everyone a chance to blow the Winter cobwebs out of their scooters' engines and exhausts; speed limits be d*****d!
Back in Georgetown, we parked the scoots and made a beeline for The Mix. The Mix is a gallery/lounge/performance space in the heart of Georgetown with an irresistable bohemian vibe which makes it just the place to discover exciting new music!
First up were the Imari Tones, which came all the way from the Land of the Rising Sun to share with the crowd at The Mix their hard-driving brand of catchy Japanese pop music. This young, engergetic trio played with verve and an enthusiasm that was downright infectious, and put everyone in a great mood; you can't help but like these guys!
Next up was Laguna, a Seattle band that puts a hot new spin on the 'lounge' sound. Laguna is fronted by the lovely Lydia Nor, whose sultry, seductive, yet oh-so-sophisticated style seems equal parts Sade and Astrud Gilberto! If the works of SHAG were set to music, the soundtrack would definitely be by Laguna!
Rounding out the night was a set by the band Hardison, whose no-nonsense rock sound ended the evening on just the right note!
All in all, it was a perfect evening to celebrate the real arrival of Spring, and a typical 'GrumpyGus' operation, marked by meticulous planning and a guaranteed great time for all!
On a sad note, the Westenders Scooter Club wishes to extend it's most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of The Cute Lepers guitarist, Travis Criscola, who passed away unexpectedly on March 28. He was a very talented young man who will be sorely missed by both music fans and scooterists on the Seattle scene.
