The Great Westenders Gumbo Throwdown!

 |

Saturday night, with a goodly number of the Westenders in attendance, two of our best chefs, GrumpyGus and RogerTango, squared off at Disco & Stubbie's place to settle once and for all who could throw down the best gumbo!

Since it was, after all, the weekend after Fat Tuesday, we decided that we were past due for a party, and a Bourbon Street/Mardi Gras/French Quarter theme certainly fit the bill! While GG & RT slung the gumbo, the other Westenders brought a veritable cornacopia of delights, including yummy salads, savoury cornbreads, and luscious desserts! Many libations were available, including pitchers of Pat O'Brien's Hurricanes, courtesy of SafetyEd and Boots!

Stubbie, Disco, & Geri did a great job bringing the flavour of Bourbon Street to Queen Anne Hill, as they decorated their home in the style of the French Quarter, and classic zydeco and Preservation Hall jazz wafted through the rooms.

After sampling the gumbos, the assembled Westenders took a vote, and awarded GrumpyGus a well deserved Gold Medal for a simply astonishing chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. RogerTango was awarded a silver for a very nice smoked chicken and andouille number, and GrumpyGus' equally excellent shrimp/crab gumbo was very close behind for the bronze!

For your own taste of this kind of food and fun, be sure to join us at our upcoming rally, "Tour di Mari #2", brought to you by Valley Scooters of Washington and the Westenders!
