The Peoples' Choice: GrumpyGus with the trophy for his award-winning chili!
Another busy weekend for the Westenders! August has certainly been the big
scootering month, hasn't it?
Saturday morning started with a bit of civic activity on the part of the
Westenders. City Councilperson (and honorary Westender) Sally Clark is hard at
work making Seattle more scooter-friendly, and sent out word to the scootering
community that she needed help identifying locations for new two-wheel vehicle
parking. Westender Smiley quickly stepped up to the plate, and got together a
group of Westenders to search the City for likely locations. After meeting for
breakfast, Smiley's scouts scoured the City, and were able to identify and
photograph a number of sites for City Hall's consideration.
But the day was far from over! This was also the weekend of the Sirens Moto
Club Chili Cook-off Weekend! A large group of Westenders took part on the ride
that departed from Cafe Racer and was led by VCOS' Eric Pravitz, who took them
on a tour of several scene locations from his scooter-themed comedy-adventure
movie "Mondo Scooterama", that was filmed here in Seattle in 2006. The ride
ended up at Georgetown Tile, which had a delightful party space in the back,
filled with a treasure trove of baby-boomer era artifacts.
The Chili Cookoff was an excellent event, with eight entries from both
individuals and the various scooter clubs in the area. When the tasting was
done and the ballots were counted, the Sirens announced that the winner of the
"People's Choice" award was none other than our own Top Chef Grumpy Gus, who
brought the hardware home for the Westenders with his truly excellent chile
verde! We were all delighted with this win for the Westenders Chili Team,
especially in the face of some truly excellent competition.
We were then treated to a showing of the 'Director's Cut' of "Mondo Scooterama".
The movie was a real delight, and included two Westenders, Plaidass and
RogerTango, as a pair of befuddled police officers.
All in all, it was an excellent evening, and the Westenders give a major
shout-out and mad props to the Sirens for putting together a truly excellent
event!
